to co-develop and write a training program to improve older adult
communication with their health care providers during medical visits.
> Project Background: Last year the C.H.E.F. Board of Directors adopted a new
strategic plan for the organization with Healthy Aging identified as one of
three main program focus areas. To affect healthy aging, a strategy to
improve the communication and relationships between health care consumers and
health care providers was selected as an initial program focus. Although this
topic is addressed in a variety of ways in the health education field, there
is currently no program available that combines skill development, behavior
change, and useful insights about the medical care community.
> During the summer of 1999, nine focus groups were conducted in Washington
State to gather information on this topic from seniors, physicians,
pharmacists, and senior service professionals. The key findings, related to
training content and design, were then tested on 205 seniors. The data is now
available to assist with program development.
> Position Objective: Working as part of a development team, the
co-developer/writer will write a 6 to 8-hour training curriculum that includes
innovative activities, current research, skill development, multiple teaching
methods, evaluation, and adult learning and behavior-change theory.
