becoming a CDCnergy Trainer. Trainers must be identified by January 11,
2002. Here is some background on the program, as well as current minimum
laptop requirements for the trainer position. Margo
Background
In the mid-1990s, the CDC Office of Communication developed a public health
tool for communication planning called CDCynergy. The product was developed
in a CD-ROM format so that reference materials, a media library, and
examples from actual projects undertaken within CDC would be immediately and
easily available as staff went through the communication planning process.
CDCynergy quickly gained popularity and began to be used by CDC funded
programs and other public health organizations external to the agency. In
1999, CDC began updating and simplifying the program and has now released a
more user-friendly and enhanced version, CDCynergy 2001. Specialized
versions of CDCynergy are being developed for immunizations, tobacco,
cardiovascular disease, STDs, and international micronutrients as well as
other areas.
Following discussions in early 2001, CDC requested that the Society
coordinate a nationwide CDCynergy 2001 training program. SOPHE’s Board of
Trustees approved the proposal to coordinate the nationwide training network
in August 2001, working with SOPHE’s Professional Development Committee. In
September, SOPHE hired Vipra Ghimire, MPH, CHES to serve as SOPHE’s Manager
of Education and Technology Outreach. This position has the primary
responsibility to manage the nationwide network of CDCynergy trainers.
CDCynergy workshops have been offered at SOPHE Midyear and Annual Meetings,
including the 2001 Annual Meeting in Atlanta. A CDCynergy workshop also has
been scheduled for SOPHE’s 2002 Midyear Meeting in Cincinnati.
