Health Communication/Education Specialist 2002:

Reducing the Spread of Recreational Water Illnesses

Swimming is the second most popular physical activity in the United
States, with over 400 million annual visits to swimming facilities.
However, over the past decade CDC has documented an increase in the number
of outbreaks of diarrheal illness associated with use of recreational
waters (lakes, rivers, swimming pools). The CDC Healthy Swimming project
was developed to raise awareness about the spread of recreational water
illnesses and develop appropriate prevention recommendations. A
communication/education specialist is needed to be the lead for
development of health communication and educational materials for
dissemination to key audiences (swimmers, pool staff, and public health
professionals). The incumbent will work with current and establish new
partners (federal, state and local public health groups, the pool sector,
etc.) to ensure that the program meets constituent needs and has a
community-based perspective. He/She will lead a local and national level
health communications advisory group, develop new health communication
materials, collect formative health communications data, and assist in
evaluating these efforts.

The incumbent should have an MPH (health communication/education) or
equivalent with at least 3 years' experience developing and implementing
public health campaigns. The incumbent should be an independent,
self-starter who is highly motivated and is challenged by complex,
long-term tasks. He/she should have excellent organizational,
interpersonal, and speaking skills for working with an interdisciplinary
team in the Division of Parasitic Diseases at CDC (epidemiologists,
writer-editor, parasitologists, public health prevention specialists),
other CDC Divisions, as well as scientific and non-scientific
collaborators throughout the United States. Salary would be commensurate
with experience (GS 9/11/12 equivalent). Ability to travel within the
United States would be desirable. Visit www.healthyswimming.org to see how
the program has developed and where the project could be taken in the
future. If interested, please send a C.V. to Dr. Michael Beach at
mjb3 at cdc.gov
