Seeking Research Assistant Intern Dates: July 2005-March 2006, 150 hours throughout project with flexible schedule$1,800 stipend Project: Case Study of Active Living Advocacy in the Damascus/Boring 
Oregon Concept Planning Process  This research project is funded by Robert Wood Johnson's Active Living Research program (www.activelivingresearch.com). The project will develop a case study to explore how participation by active living advocates and their allies contributed to the incorporation of best active living environment practices into the Damascus/Boring Concept Plan. The case study will also explore how a design-centered approach impacted the creation of the plan, to what extent active living elements are incorporated into the final plans, and how Oregon and Portland Metro's land use and transportation planning system provide a foundation for these efforts. Qualifications/Skills:Required: Graduate level student or recent graduate in urban planning, urban design, architecture, public health or closely related field. Basic knowledge of regional urban planning, particularly how transportation and land use planning can impact opportunities for walking, biking and transit ridership. Ability to understand and apply case study methodology.  Excellent organizational, writing and analysis skills; strong computer skills in word processing and database management. Preferred: Knowledge or familiarity of concept planning, design charette and urban growth boundary expansion processes.  Familiarity with Oregon state and Portland regional planning goals and processes. Good PowerPoint computer skills.   Duties: 1)     Assist in the compilation and review of base state, regional and local documents to identify existing policies and regulations that provide framework for achieving active living goals and objectives.  Assist in identifying policy areas that could be strengthened in regional planning efforts in order to effectively support active living in the physical environment. 2)     Conduct literature review to identify current research and practice on urban planning and active living outcomes and role of advocates in regional planning and social movements.3)     Assist in the compilation, review and analysis of numerous archived documents from 18- month planning process, including goals, evaluation measures, technical team meeting notes, maps, design alternatives, images and other related resource material from the Damascus Concept Planning process and design charette process.4)     Assist in refining methodology to evaluate Damascus/Boring planning process and develop case study on role of advocacy in regional planning process.5)     Assist in the evaluation of the process of active living advocacy and the impact that active living advocacy had on Damascus/Boring concept planning outcomes. 6)     Assist in arranging, conducting, documenting and analyzing a series of stakeholder interviews.7)     Assist in drafting and editing a case study report for peer-review journals.8)     Assist in the compilation of database information for the dissemination of the case study.
