Greetings.
This summer my daugher interned for a nonprofit organization, Bridges to
Understanding. The program peaked my interest because of the opportunity to
learn from young people, and to develop skills to tell stories using cameras
and digital technology. I thought my friends in the public health community
would be interested to learn about this program,

world. You can also learn about our up and coming workshops.:

Here is some information about Bridges.

Bridges builds cultural understanding by giving voice to youth worldwide
through interactive storytelling on the Internet. The mission is to connect
middle school students around the world, in both developed and indigenous
communities. This program teaches the world’s children to grow into adults
who understand and honor cultural diversity.

This is possible by digital storytelling mentored by professionals and
created by students. These stories are shared through the Bridges website
where our students can engage each other, ask questions about each others'
lives and collaborate to create multimedia stories exploring their culture.
Participants work closely with students, their families and their
communities. They are welcomed as teachers bringing modern tools and
opportunities to the children. In return, our mentors come home with stories
of how they were welcomed into remote communities, forged strong connections
with the children they mentored and their families, and shared their
expertise to help give a voice to cultures seldom heard.

Bridges sites are located throughout the world. We are currently working
with children in India, Peru, Nepal, Kenya, Guatemala, the Navajo Nation,
Artic Village, California, Florida and Washington. An integral part of our
program is the training and coordination of mentors who volunteer at each of
our sites to provide technical and photographic expertise. Prior to placing
our mentors in the Bridges sites, we require workshops where we train them
in the tools, software and curriculum that are used in our program.

Our next volunteer vacation coming up is in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala from
October 16-27, 2005. This is the first time that Bridges has done a workshop
in Guatemala and volunteers are needed. Bridges is working with Fotokid’s
Mission down in Guatemala, which is an organization that “…is to help small
groups of Central American young people from the poorest of barrios develop
useful, employable skills as a means to self-exploration, expression and
discovery.” (www.fotokids.org).
