Dear colleagues,

Please see below for message dated November 27 from Ron Sims, King County
Executive:

> Dear Public Health Staff:
>
> I am very pleased to announce my appointment of David Fleming, M.D. as
Director of Public Health > -> Seattle & King County.
>
> Dr. Fleming currently serves as director of Global Health Strategies at
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In this capacity, he has been responsible
for the creation, development and oversight of cross-cutting programs targeting
diseases and conditions that disproportionately affect the world's poorest
people and counties. His role has been to bring vision, innovation and
leadership to a number of initiatives including: combating vaccine preventable
diseases; promoting nutrition programs and infant and young children feeding
programs; maternal and child survival; leadership development; public health
information systems; emergency relief; and community development for self
sufficiency.
>
> David is also Clinical Associate Professor in Epidemiology at the U.W.
School of Public Health.
>
> David has an impressive background, which will serve him, and us, very
well. Prior to joining the Foundation in 2003, he worked at the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he served from 2000 to 2003 as
deputy director of CDC for Science and Public Health and in 2002 as acting
director of the agency. David also served as deputy administrator, Agency for
Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and in that capacity he provided
leadership in shaping policy and developing and using CDC's and ATSDR's
capabilities in science and public health practice. He served as the principal
source of expertise and advice to the director on science and public health
programs, and oversaw CDC offices of Minority Health, Global Health, Women's
Health and the Associate Director for Science.
>
> Before joining CDC, from 1986-2000, David served first as deputy and
then as state epidemiologist with the Oregon Health Division, overseeing a
broad range of public health programs. He also served on the faculty of the
Department of Public Health at Oregon Health Sciences University for 17 years.
David has published scientific articles on a wide range of public health
issues. He received his M.D. from the State University of New York Upstate
Medical Center in Syracuse. David is board certified in internal medicine and
preventive medicine. He has served as president of the Council of State and
Territorial Epidemiologists and many Federal and National Academy of
Science/Institute of Medicine Committees as well as serving on the boards of a
number of Global Public Health Alliances.
>
> I am very pleased that David is ready to grapple with the opportunities
and challenges in our health department. He has come to recognize, as I do, how
talented you are. I have also emphasized to him how much I support the good
work of this department.
>
> Our search for a new Public Health leader was extensive and nationwide,
and a number of very strong candidates were identified. We are indeed fortunate
that an individual of David> '> s stature and caliber was available right in
our own community. We anticipate David will start in his new role on or about
February 6, 2007
>
> I would also like to thank Dorothy Teeter, who served extremely well as
Interim Director for the department. Dorothy> '> s leadership during this
period has helped to steer the department through a number of public health
challenges and successes. I sincerely appreciate her good work.
>
> Peace and Prosperity,
>
> Ron Sims
