GLOBAL COMMISSION ON SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH (CSDH)
JOB VACANCY NOTICES
Scientific Researcher/Coordinator 51;RAIII/IV (Ref 242) & Research
Fellow/Senior Research Fellow 51; RA1A/II (Ref 243)
At the 2004 World Health Assembly, the Director-General announced the
beginning of a process to act upon the social causes of ill health and
inequities by calling for a global Commission on Social Determinants of
Health (CSDH). The CSDH has a long term vision of world where people
matter, where health is founded on social justice as its underlying
principle, and where policy, action and institutional organization draws
from an understanding of the complex relationships within society and
between the different factors and actions that influence health. The CSDH,
over three years, will set the foundation for sustained processes to
profile and integrate the social determinants of health within public
policy and practice. The work of the Commission will be supported by two
secretariats: one based in University College, London - termed the
"Scientific Secretariat"; and one in WHO, Geneva.
The two posts now advertised will be based at UCL, can be full or part
time, and will complete a London based team of four working to the
Chairman, Professor Sir Michael Marmot. Both posts will involve foreign
travel, the collation and preparation of reports on a broad range of
scientific data across multiple disciplines, and exposure to organisations
and individuals involved in the making of global health policies. The
Commissions work will be based around nine knowledge networks,
provisionally entitled: Priority Public Health Conditions; Child Health
and Education; Food Security; Human Settlements; Social Exclusion;
Employment; Globalization; Health Systems and Measurement. Setting up of
quality assurance systems for the products of the Commission, preparing
the relevant knowledge products, and co-ordinating and writing the Interim
and Final Commission Reports will form the primary tasks of the team.
The work of the Commission will provide a unique opportunity to gain an
insight into international health policy, and arise at a juncture that UCL
is expanding its involvement and profile in Global Health. A new
Institute, to be launched in October 2005, will be directly linked to the
work of the Commission and will be housed alongside the Department.
Applications are invited from graduates from the fields of Public Health,
Epidemiology, International Development or Social or biological sciences
relevant to the social determinants of health. Applicants should have
obtained higher training, qualifications (PhD or equivalent) and relevant
research experience in these fields. Excellent communication and
organisation skills, the ability to work effectively in a team, to
deadlines and unsupervised, accuracy and an eye for detail, as well as
self-motivation and initiative are all essential qualities. Salaries:
RAIII/IV: £36,557-48,215 pa inclusive, RA1A/II: £21,79151; £38,213 pa
inclusive. Initial funding secured to 30/11/07.
