DESCRIPTION:

Want to get the most circulation and longest use from your book
purchases? Learning about the way a book is made can help you decide
which formats to buy. It can also help you select which method to
request when re-binding.

This one-day class provides the tools needed to make appropriate decisions
that balance preservation goals and financial realities. The lecture will
cover book structure and modern book manufacturing methods; an overview of
bindery operations, with a look at leaf attachment methods; discussion of
materials and technical terms used by binders; guidelines for
cost-effectively upgrading your binding program; and an overview of
contracts and vendor relations. There will be a decision-making practicum
using sample materials, and an exhibit of binding materials and methods.
