ProQuest CSA has proposed a project that would include digitization and
indexing of out-of-copyright portions of the Seattle Times.

The Seattle Times (editions from 1886 to 1922) would be made available
online and would be searchable. Users would be able to view and print
digital images of the actual articles. Such access would provide
educational and cultural benefits to the citizens of Washington State
and beyond.

ProQuest would perform the initial digitization for a substantial
upfront fee, providing access through its interface and search platform
for an additional annual access charge. The state would actually own the
data and images, and would hold copies in deep archive, but access would
be provided through ProQuest's superior interface.

A group of librarians and representatives from museums and other
concerned organizations has been formed to investigate the possibility
of this project and discuss issues such as cost, maintenance, and
stewardship.

It's not too late to participate and contribute to this very important
project. If you're interested in volunteering for this committee, or if
you have further questions, please contact Heather Muller at the
