[Preservenw] In Search of a New Bindery Stapler

Good morning,

I'm writing from the preservation/repair/binding unit at Portland State
University. One of our usual treatments for pamphlet-sized materials is
to bind them into Archival Products "Quick Bind" covers using a
foot-pedal-operated stapler that uses 1/2" staples and converts from
flat to saddle stapling.

This machine is currently our only means of binding a large quantity of
pamphlet-size materials and I feel pretty strongly we're in the market
for another stapler. Ours was made by Bostich and is of unknown, but
advanced, age. As the years go by it grows increasingly cantankerous,
jams frequently, refuses to tuck down the sharp edges of staples, and
throws its screws.

My question to the list is -- is there anyone out there who uses a
satisfactory heavy-duty bindery stapler and knows where we might be able
to find one? Or, is anyone aware of a servicer for a vintage Bostich
stapler? So far, the only possibilities I have turned up are staplers
that can only accomodate up to fifty sheets or fewer (we need something
burly that can power through the fairly thick fabric of pamphlet binder
spines) and one impressive bruiser called the Imperator, whose price tag
is out of our reach.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations you may have!

Carolee
