bingo, I found the following in /var/log/secure:
Feb  3 13:59:02 gilead keyclient: security_init: hello
Feb  3 13:59:02 gilead keyclient: couldn't parse session key:
/etc/httpd/conf/ssl.key/server.key
Feb  3 13:59:02 gilead keyclient: security_init failed

This key works fine for apache.

Unless I'm missing something (and I probably am) I don't see a solution
posted in any of these threads. What I do see which interests me, however,
is that others are reporting a lot more error logging output than I'm
seeing, i.e. on keyclient failure:    SSL_CTX_load_verify_locations failed:
   (set 'ssl_ca_file' or 'ssl_ca_path'?)

Whereas I get no output, and no log entry, at least anywhere that I know of
to look. I have debug set in my config file... where does this log output
get written to?
