Fellow Husky,
Have you heard of Relay for Life? It's the American Cancer Societies' flagship fundraising event where members organize teams to fundraise and then celebrate there efforts with a 24-hour walk/party to symbolize their ongoing commitment to defeat this disease. Come to find out, the UW just happens to have one of the best Relays in the nation... last year we raised more than $180,000 for cancer research and advocacy (#4 college relay in the nation) and had an awesome time camping out and kickin' it at Husky stadium all night long (see the end of this message for more on the actual event).
But what made UW's 2005 Relay so great? The teams--in both quantity and quality. MAKE NO MISTAKE: THE SUCCESS OF OUR RELAY HINGES ON OUR ABILITY TO RECRUIT TEAMS! That's why I am asking for your help. I looking for a few individuals to join the Relay for Life recruitment committee and help spread the word about relay around UW and its surrounding communities. If you are even mildly persuasive, have some connections, and want to make a serious difference in the fight against cancer while increasing the solidarity of this commuter campus, please consider joining. If you are interested in becoming a recruitment committee member, please shoot me a quick e-mail (dluckz at u.washington.edu) as soon as possible as the committee will be meeting early next week to get things rolling. Thanks for your time and remember, the good fight is always worth fighting.
Sincerely,
Dan Luck

So how the heck does this Relay for Life thing work? It all starts when…
Super-cool kids decide they want to make a difference in the FIGHT AGAINST CANCER and organize a team. They then raise a bunch of money (all of which will go directly to the American Cancer Society) from now until mid-spring. Having worked diligently, these teams collectively decide to give themselves a big pat on the back and assemble for an overnight fiesta at Husky Stadium. Team members take turns walking around the track, playing flag football and capture the flag, signing their hearts out in "relay idol," or just relaxing with their friends to live music and free food. Here at UW our relay is almost entirely collegiate-it's a really cool chance for students to get together and rally against a great cause: the fight against cancer. But this event is more than just a party. We also feature a cancer survivor's lap, as well as a Luminaria ceremony where we light all of Husky Stadium exclusively
by candle to commemorate and honor those who have fought cancer and those continuing to fight it today. It is a spectacle unlike anything else.
This year's Relay at UW won't be held until May 13th-14th. But to make UW's
relay great (lots of money + lot’s of fun), recruitment and fundraising needs to start NOW! If you are interested in helping recruit teams or want to help out with Relay in
any capacity, please let contact me.
