Dear Student Leader:

This past year, the University of Washington faced unprecedented budget
cuts and tuition increases. For the first time in modern history, the
University of Washington receives more funding from tuition than from
the state government. Throughout the course of last year's debate over
the State Budget, it became increasingly clear that many legislators in
Olympia were unconcerned with investing in higher education because they
simply could not hear the voice of the students. The Chair of the House
Higher Education Committee called it "disturbing" that only one student
representative showed up to speak out against higher tuition.

With the lessons of last year in mind, the ASUW has created a new
program to ensure that the State Legislature and other levels of
government never ignore students again. This program, the Political
Action Network will harness the influence of campus leaders like you in
organizing mailing campaigns, phone banking, and trips to Olympia to
lobby legislators.

We are asking for you to become a leader in this program, right from the
start. Become a founder. Whether you represent yourself, a student
organization, fraternity, sorority or residence hall, it's in your
interest to make sure that lawmakers listen.

Here's how you can help:

* Sign up for the Political Action Network today!

* Are you involved with any student groups? Tell us. You will
only be contacted when we need your active, immediate support.

* Help spread the word. Refer other campus groups and students to
sign up.

With a little effort on your part and on the part of other leaders on
campus, we can create an emboldened, unified student voice in Olympia.

Sincerely,

ASUW Office of Government Relations
