Anjan Ghosh will be speaking on:

“Intimations of Violence: Rumor and Violence during the Ayodhya agitation in West Bengal and Bangladesh” 
November 3, Friday, 3:30 PM, Thomson 317

West Bengal witnessed communal violence after nearly three decades, in the wake of the demolition of the Babri mosque, in December 1992. What role did rumor play in precipitating this violence? How did rumors circulate between West Bengal and Bangladesh? What did it mean in the variant political contexts that prevailed across the borders?

Anjan Ghosh completed his Ph.D. (1998) in Anthropology & History from the University of Michigan. He is a Fellow in Political Science, Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, India. Presently, he is a Fulbright Visiting Professor at International Studies, Portland State University, for Fall 2006.

His research interests include: Informal modes of communication and violence, specifically rumor and communal violence in Bengal 1946-92; Durga Puja in contemporary Calcutta; and history of sociology and social anthropology in India.
