India is a place where immense wealth and technical expertise exist side-by-side with dire poverty and social oppression. Americans image of India has evolved over the past years from one of a poverty-stricken, deeply spiritual international backwater to that of a dynamic economic
and political power which is poised to take its place among the top economies of the world over the next several decades. Our discussions of India are often couched in terms of what we mean to them: what kind of aid can we provide to the downtrodden there? Why doesnt India align itself more closely with American international political aspirations? How can we prevent those Indian engineers and software developers from taking our jobs through outsourcing?
Keith Snodgrass, the Associate Director and Outreach Coordinator of the South Asia Center at the University of Washington, will address these questions and explain why India matters to the US. Moreover, he will draw on his experience of living and studying in India and Pakistan, and following developments in the region for the past 20 years, to address issues that influence the lives of Indians and therefore directly or indirectly influence us.
Following his talk, a small panel of participants from India will add to Keiths remarks and elaborate on their own experiences. Keith and Tese Neighbor, Director of Professional Development at the World Affairs Council, will discuss how India can be integrated into classroom curriculum and distribute up-to-date teaching resources.
Cost: $20 includes light buffet, lecture by Keith Snodgrass, panel, classroom resources, and clock hours. Please register by November 9 online at www.world-affairs.org or by using the form below.
