ANNOUNCING TWO EXCITING NEW COURSES SUITABLE FOR GRADUATES OR UNDERGRADUATES:
The following courses will appear on the time schedule for next quarter by
Thursday 11/9.

SISSA 490A Childhood and Youth in South Asia
Dr. Jane Dyson, Visiting Lecturer, Jackson School of International Studies

Winter Quarter 2007, Tuesdays and Thursdays 2.30-4.20 Thomson 134

This inter-disciplinary course explores childhood and youth in South Asia. The
course is divided into three parts. In the first part - ‘Orientations’ - we
discuss theoretical approaches to studying childhood and youth in South Asia.
The second part of the course is built around a set of themes relevant to an
understanding of children’s and young people’s lives in the South Asian region,
namely: work, education, violence, and health. Students will be asked to apply
the theoretical frameworks discussed in the first part of the course to explore
how these key topics might be approached. The final part of the course –
‘Representing Youth’ – is concerned with issues of how young people are
represented and represent themselves, and the political implications of these
representations.

SISSA 490B Himalayan Worlds
Dr. Jane Dyson, Visiting Lecturer, Jackson School of International Studies

Winter Quarter 2007, Wednesday 2.30-4.20 Savory 153

This course provides a broad and inter-disciplinary perspective on aspects of
political change, social transformation and environmental dynamics in the
Himalayan region. The course begins by considering how global change is
reshaping the Himalayan region politically, socially, culturally and
environmentally. We then examine how people within the Himalayas are remaking
their region ‘from within’. In the final part of the course, we discuss
different representations of the Himalaya within scholarly work, the media and
popular culture.
