Dissertation Colloquium
'Social Universe of Protected Areas: Sustainable Tourism in Periyar Tiger
Reserve'
By Tapoja Chaudhuri
Tuesday, Nov 21, Raitt Hall 221, 3:30 5:00 PM
How do abstract notions of environmentalism become locally meaningful? How do people from different social groups come together to work on a collaborative eco-tourism project? What does an ethnographic focus on a South Indian tiger reserve teach us in terms of wildlife conservation? How does an indigenous peoples' movement for land rights affect the 'Periyar Family' in Kerala?
These are some of the questions motivating the dissertation research. The methods used will be primarily participant observation, life history collection, open-ended interviews and visual documentation.
Tapoja Chaudhuri is a Ph.D. Student in the Department of Anthropology, University of Washington.
