5th Annual Western Regional International Health Conference
February 16-18 2007, Venue: Various Locations on UW Seattle Campus
Register now for the Fifth Western Regional International Health Conference to be held here in Seattle on the University of Washington campus, February 16-18, 2007. The conference theme "Global Health Through Different Lenses: Reflections, Perspectives, and Visions for the Future", challenges us to see global health through multiple viewpoints and disciplines and thus will present a diverse and exciting program for all who attend. Dr. Jim Yong Kim, of Harvard University and Partners in Health will be our keynote lecturer and will present a talk entitled; "The Golden Age of Global Health: An Ethnography in Progress"!
Registrants will have access to over 50 breakout sessions and a pre-conference, Evans School-sponsored, Wolfle Lecture on Friday afternoon (4:30-5:30p) by Dr. Helene Gayle of CARE. On Saturday evening there will be a special screening of the documentary film Salud! which highlights the Cuban healthcare system. This conference is organized by an interdisciplinary group of undergraduate, graduate and professional students at the University of Washington with the assistance of various faculty and organizational members of the Puget Sound Partners for Global Health.
Topics at the conference include: Refugees, conflict situations and health, Global health and the environment, HIV vaccine development, Health promotion through the arts, Building new health systems and minimizing aid colonization, Film, film festivals and representation, Health Consequences of the Iraq war, Water quality and human health, Oral health disparities around the globe

Pratidhwani Drama Wing will hold additional auditions for its next main-stage play in English:
Everyone Loves a Good Tsunami

Audition slots will be 15 minutes long.
Auditions are by appointment only. For appointment please contact Agastya

Auditions will consist of reading from the script. Monologs, headshots and resumes are welcome, but optional. Call backs (if required) will be announced at a later time. The show is scheduled for late June / early July. We are primarily looking to cast two middle-aged female roles (highlighted below), however any one interested in other roles is also welcome to audition.
All characters are of Indian descent, and we are primarily looking for South Asian actors.
Here is the description of characters in the play. The ages specified are guidelines and
actors do not need to be that age - as long as they can convincingly portray it.
- Dr. Sunil Ahuja, 55 president, India Association. A man with strong
opinions, born and brought up in India.
- Dr. Naresh Panjwani, 51 vice-president, India Association, born and
brought up in India.
- Mrs. Sushma Kataria, 45-55 treasurer, India Association, born and
brought up in India.
- Lokesh Jindal, 40 general secretary, India Association, born and
brought up in India.
- Mrs. Indu Ahuja, 45-50 Dr. Sunil Ahuja's wife, born and brought up in
India.
- Aarti Ahuja, 19 Dr. Sunil Ahuja's daughter, born and brought up in the
US.
- Pinky Ahuja, 11 Dr. Sunil Ahuja's second daughter (heard, never seen),
born and brought up in the US. Piano player and singer.

Sukumar Periwal, UW
Diaspora: Security threat or competitive advantage?
Sukumar Periwal was born in New Delhi, India, and educated in the United
States and Britain. After completing his D.Phil. in International
Relations at the University of Oxford, Sukumar emigrated to Canada. In
previous research fellowships at the Central European University and the
Institute of Asian Research at the University of British Columbia, he has
studied nationalism and intercultural relations. He is currently at the
University of Washington on a leave of absence from the Intergovernmental
Relations Secretariat of the Government of British Columbia, where he is
Director, International Relations.

Mr. Sen assumed charge as Ambassador of India to the United States of America in August 2004. Mr. Sen's portfolio of service throughout the years includes participation in summit meetings in the United Nations, Commonwealth, Non-Aligned Movement, Six Nation Five Continent Peace Initiative, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, IAEA, G-15, over 160 bilateral summit meetings and other forums. He has also had several assignments as Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of India for meetings with Heads of State or Government of neighboring and other countries. Prior to his Ambassadorship in the United States, Mr. Sen served as Ambassador to Mexico from September 1991 to August 1992; Ambassador to the Russian Federation from October 1992 to October 1998; Ambassador to Germany from October 1998 to May 2002; and High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from May 2002 to April 2004.Ambassador Sen was born on April 9, 1944, and joined the Indian Foreign
Service in July 1966.

Description:
In this half-day workshop, University of Washington professors will
introduce educators to documentary films that can be used to teach
students about cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding. This
year's workshop will feature films dealing with issues in Latin America,
Europe and Canada. The films provide excellent teaching "tools" for
introducing diversity and cross-cultural issues into your classrooms
today. The workshop provides an opportunity to enhance that learning to
include critical social issues at the international level.
Presentations include the recent Canadian film, Cry from the
Diary of a Métis Child, presented by Professor Charlotte Coté, American
Indian Studies; London: The Post-Imperial City presented by Professor
Katharyne Mitchell, Geography; and. Nietos. Verdad y memoria /
Grandchildren: Truth and Memory, presented by Cynthia Steele, Professor
and Acting Chair of the Department of Comparative Literature.
