In this paper, Sudipta Kaviraj argues that conventional theories of subalternity
are not adequate for understanding caste humiliation in India.

Sudipta Kaviraj is a renowned political theorist, a foremost political scientist of India, and a member of the Subaltern Studies Collective. He is the author of The Unhappy Consciousness : Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay and the Formation of
