"Post-colonial Literatures of South Asia" offers a basic introduction to some of the key concepts and debates in post-colonial studies with a focus on writing from the South Asian subcontinent and its diaspora. We'll read novels, stories, and essays in English and in translation by authors such as Rabindranath Tagore, Salman Rushdie, Khushwant Singh, Sara Suleri, Mahasweta Devi, and Shyam Selvadurai spanning the 20th century from/about pre-independence, partition of the subcontinent, and post-independence India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Issues covered include anti-colonialism and nationalisms, gender and sexuality, communal violence, colonial and contemporary Orientalism, and migration.
