1. February 13, 30:30 PM Thomson 234
"Rural Women's Rights Movement in Nepal", a presentation by Kaji Naryan Shreshta. This presentation relates with Women Acting Together for Change (WATCH)'s initiative to prepare and organize rural poor women and disadvantaged people.

2. Friday, February 1, 2:00 - 3:30 pm, Communications 120.
"Bombay Tramways and Urban Development". Professor Frank Conlon, Professor Emeritus, History, discusses the history of internal tramway transport in the colonial city of Bombay from the mid-19th to the mid-20th centuries. Discussed will be the history of tram technology and its reception by the public.


3. February 13, 6:30 pm onwards
Former US Ambassador to Pakistan Wendy Chamberlin, in collaboration with the World Affairs Council, presents a talk on Pakistan's present and post-election possibilities, "Pakistan's Best Chance".

4. February 29 - March 1. SACPAN 2008 CONFERENCE, UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, VANCOUVER, BC
The South Asian Conference of the Pacific Northwest will have its annual 2008 Conference at Vancouver, BC from February 29 - March 1 2008. The Graduate Student Conference will be held on March 29.

5. March 5: 7:00 PM, Walker Ames Room, Kane Hall, UW Campus.
"Democratic Elections and the Military in Pakistan and Thailand," Charles Keyes, Professor of Anthropology and International Studies,and Ethan Casey, author of Alive and Well in Pakistan, sponsored by the Southeast Asian Studies and South Asian Studies Centers and the Global Studies Center.
This event is free, open to the public, and does not require registration. Coffee and tea will be served.

Hear experts from the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington and other leading institutions address major national and international policy issues. The lecture series is free and open to the public - registration is not necessary.

1. India Association of Western Washington Fellowships
For the Study of South Asia
for 2008-2009 academic year
The South Asia Center is pleased to announce the sixth annual competition for the awarding of the India Association of Western Washington Scholarships.
This competition is open to all University of Washington students who are South Asia majors or who have demonstrated an interest in South Asia as defined below.
Two awards will be made, each in the amount of $1000, for support of the awardee's studies during the 2008-2009 academic year. For more information visit http://jsis.washington.edu/soasia/IAWWSchol.shtml


2. The American Institute of Indian Studies welcomes applications for its Summer 2008 and academic year 2008-2009 language programs in India. All academic year applicants should have the equivalent of two years of prior language study.The second-year summer Hindi program will be geared to both undergraduates and graduates, and will be appropriate for students who may not necessarily be interested in an academic career.

Application Deadline: January 31, 2008.

3. American Institute of Pakistant Studies Fellowships 2008-2009

Fellowships are now available.
Application deadline on February 1, 2008.Applications are invited for research fellowships at the pre- or post-doctoral level for projects lasting two to nine months. The amount of the stipends will be comparable to Fulbright Awards and will be determined by the Fellowships Committee based on availability of funds and current rates as defined by the U S State Department.

The Center for South Asia Studies welcomes entries for its 2007-2008 Amrit
Kaur Ahluwalia Memorial Outstanding Paper Prize for work that addresses some
aspect of Sikhism: Sikh history, language and literature, religion, culture,
art or music. The deadline for the paper prize is March 20, 2008. Winners

The United States Institute of Peace is an independent non-partisan institution established by Congress to increase the nation's peacebuilding capacity, seeking a person to serve as a Research Associate (Program Officer) with a specialization in South Asia or Southeast Asia. The incumbent will conceive, design and implement projects relating to the prevention, management, and resolution of conflict in South or Southeast Asia (e.g. India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines).

1. Digital Asia: Documentary Digital Video Workshop

The Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies (EAPS), the Asian Educational
Media Service (AEMS), and Applied Technologies for Learning in the Arts &
Sciences (ATLAS) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, invite
applications for a weekend workshop on documentary digital video for
scholars in Asian Studies, May 16-17, 2008, in Urbana, Illinois.
