Dear all,

I am writing to remind you about the interdisiplinary workshop outlined below, which will be superb preparation for for the campus visits of Paul Willis, Jean Lave, David Harvey, and Cindi Katz next week. In addition to what I have set out below, I am keen for us to discuss what possible collective questions we might ask the visiting scholars in the light of our research and teaching experience. If you are planning to attend the workshop, and haven't replied already, please let me know by email - thanks. Please also note the changed location of the workshop.

Interdisciplinary workshop on the work of Paul Willis

At this workshop, faculty, graduate students and undergraduates will discuss
the implications of Paul Willis's work for an understanding of
youth, class and educational change. It is now over thirty years since Willis
published his landmark text - Learning to Labour - and the conditions in which
young people seek education, employment and respect have changed dramatically
in this period. Through thinking about the work of Willis alongside the
scholarship of Lave, Harvey and Katz, we will address the following three
questions in the workshop: What are the challenges facing young people in the
contemporary world in obtaining relevant education within and outside school
settings? What does a global perspective add to our understanding of this
question? And how are some of Paul Willis's conceptual ideas still important
for studying young people's education and broader lives?

If you are interested in attending please rsvp to Craig Jeffrey cjj3 at u.washington.edu
