1. May 8, 3:30 pm, Location TBA. 

Devesh Kapur, will speak on "Globalization and the Paradox of Indian Democracy". He is associate professor of political science at Penn, and holds the Madan Lal Sobti Professorship for the Study of Contemporary India. Prior to arriving at Penn, Professor Kapur was associate professor of government at the University of Texas at Austin, and before that the Frederick Danziger Associate Professor of Government at Harvard. His research focuses on human capital, national and international public institutions, and the ways in which local-global linkages affect political and economic change in developing countries.     

2. May 19, Elliot Bay Book Company, Seattle, 7:30 pm. 
Preeta Samarasan reads from her new book about an immigrant Indian family in Malaysia Evening is the Whole Day.  "A magical, exuberant, tragicomic vision of post-colonial Malaysia reminiscent of Rushdie and Roy. In prose of acrobatic grace, Samarasan conjures a vibrant portrait, by turns intimate and sweeping, of characters and a country coming of age. The debut of a significant and thrilling new talent.".

Salman Rushdie will talk on his  new novel, The Enchantress of Florence. "Vivid, gripping, irreverent, bawdy, profoundly moving, and completely absorbing, The Enchantress of Florence is a dazzling book full of wonders by one of the world's most important living writers. ".  

4. June 16 at Town Hall, Seattle. 7:30 pm.  
AHMED RASHID talks about his new book on Pakistan, Descent into Chaos: The United States and the Failure of Nation-Building in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia.  Ahmed Rashid is a best-selling Pakistani journalist based in Lahore. He writes for the 'Far Eastern Economic Review', the 'Daily Telegraph', and 'The Wall Street Journal'.

1. UW Fellowship to Pembroke College, Cambridge, UK 


Students at any level in a graduate degree program in the social sciences or the humanities at the University of Washington
are eligible to apply for the University of Washington Fellowship to Pembroke College, Cambridge (England).

2. Seattle Public Schools Startalk Program has funding from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (civilian section) to help 2 Hindi or Urdu speakers start on the road to teacher certification this summer from about July 14-end of August.  Candidates must have a BA degree from an accredited university , be fluent in Hindi and/or Urd u, and take the state's WEST B exam of reading, English, and math in May.  Startalk  is on the University of Maryland website. The National Foreign Language Center oversees the grant, given under the National Security Language Initiative. The Dept. of Education, State, and Defense are also co-sponsors of the NSLI.

1. TEA English Teaching Opportunity
As part A US State Department-funded program,  the Eurasia/South Asia Teaching Excellence & Achievement Program (TEA) is seeking applicants for the US Teachers reciprocal visit component of the program. The applicants sought are US, secondary-level teachers of English as a Foreign Language and Social Sciences to participate in a two-week professional exchange program in one of the following countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Georgia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, or Ukraine.  Eligible applicants must be secondary-level (middle or high school), teaching professionals with five or more years of classroom experience in disciplines including English as a Foreign Language, English Language or Literature, and social sciences (including social studies, civics, and history), U.S. citizens, and able to travel in April 3-17, 2009. 
The program is fully funded and provides visa support, round-trip domestic airfare, lodging and meals to attend the TEA U.S. Conference, round-trip airfare from the U.S. to the assigned country in Eurasia or South Asia, emergency medical evacuation plan, recommended vaccinations, and lodging and a daily stipend in host country. 1. New Language Course! ????????? ????? ! 
The Department of Asian Languages and Literature is pleased to announce that during the coming summer (June 23-August 22, 2008) it will be offering an instructional program in intensive first-year Hindi.  This course, comprising Hindi 311,312,313, is equal to a full year of instruction in Hindi.  It meets four hours per day (8:30-12:30), five days per week.  Students completing the course will be given the opportunity to develop their skills with regard to each of speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension.  No prior knowledge of Hindi is required.  The instructor for the course is Jameel Ahmad of Asian Languages and Literatures.   Note: Concurrent registration in Hindi 311,312, and 313 is required.

2. Winter 2009 Study Abroad : Vikramaditya Prakash will lead a study abroad tour to India this Winter 2009, to look at the architecture, planning and landscape of India's globalizing cities. The program will be based in the city of Chandigarh, a town planeed by Le Corbusier.  The program will also look at other urban centers in India like Jaipur, Agra and Delhi. 3. LAST FEW DAYS! Call for papers for the Western Conference of the Association for Asian Studies (WCAAS) meeting to be held at the University of
Colorado at Boulder, September 12-14, 2008.  Send panel or individual paper proposals to Program Committee, Center fo r Asian Studies,
Campus Box 279, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309-0279. Proposals should be received by May 1, 2008.  Partial support will be
available for graduate students traveling to the conference to present papers.  Indicate graduate student status and whether or not
