June 8, 3 pm - 5 pm, Kane Hall 225, University of Washington. Baul Songs of Bengal, by Parvathy Baul.
Bauls belong to a devotional tradition known for its humanistic and egalitarian beliefs. They come from both Hindu and Muslim communities in West Bengal, India and in Bangladesh and draw from both religions while espousing neither. In their songs, which are among the most popular Bengali folk songs, they sing about love, the equality of all human beings, the female partner as the highest guru, and the human body as the dwelling place of the divine and the means to liberation. Parvathy Baul, a singer from West Bengal, is one of the few female sadhikas (practitioners) who performs the songs for the general public. She is known for her electrifying voice and masterful solo renderings of Baul song and dance while accompanying herself on the ektara (one-stringed instrument) and duggi (a small clay drum hung from the shoulder).
This is a ticketed performance. Tickets are $12 Adults, $8 Ragamala Members, and $6 Children under 10. Tickets are available at the door 45 minutes before the show.
This performance is sponsored by Ragamala and the South Asia Center at the UW Jackson School of International Studies.
