Re-writing my Para, my Neighborhood: Examining a youth critical literacy program in Central Calcutta
In a variety of public discourses, socio-economically underprivileged neighborhoods in urban India are frequently reduced to what Arturo Escobar calls 'placeless abstractions.' Bowbazaar, a neighborhood in central Calcutta, is one such neighborhood perpetually interpreted and constructed as a 'slum' and 'red-light area' abstraction in a range of discourses from news media to development. In December 2007, a group of youth living in Bowbazaar participated in a critical literacy program called 'Para Diaries' (Neighborhood Diaries), which encourages literacy as a social practice through neighborhood story-telling. This ethnographic study examines how urban youth living in Bowbazaar engage in a process of meaning-making through personally imagining and socially constructing their neighborhood.
