This paper examines the history of English translations of the Urdu ghazals
of Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib (1797-1869). The ghazal is one of the most
popular poetic genres in world literature. The ghazal couplets are two-line
long poems and pose a great challenge for translation. To introduce Ghalib
and his poetry into English has been attempted for almost one hundred
years. This paper offers a historical and comparative perspective on the
strategies employed by different translators in different times and for
different target audiences.
