WAXING PHILOSOPHICAL ABOUT SCIENCE
International conference brings big science thinkers together
(Halifax, NS) – Debates about "proof" and "evidence", “good” and “exact”
sciences linger among academics just as they do among the general public.
Three experts in the field of Science and Technology Studies, or the
humanities and social studies of science, will be featured at the 9th
biennial meeting of the International Society for the History of Philosophy
and Science at the University of King’s College, 6350 Coburg Rd. in
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, June 21-24, 2012.
Distinguished philosopher, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and
Companion of the Order of Canada, Ian Hacking will explore rhetoric,
especially paradigms, in scientific discourse on June 22. This will follow
a lecture on the previous night by prominent professor in the Institute for
Advanced Studies at Princeton University, Heinrich von Staden, about
shifting notions of “proof” and “evidence” in experimental science.
Kathleen Okruhlik, a professor at the University of Western Ontario
and President of the Canadian Society for History and Philosophy of
Science, caps the conference with her investigation of the roles of desire
and will in notions of “good science” on June 23. The free keynotes start
at 5:30pm.
A special Plenary Symposium on the nature of “exact” science is also open
to the public June 23rd at 2:15pm. All public events will occur in Alumni
Hall.
“It’s not very often that leading thinkers like these are brought together
in this way in Canada,” says Emily Tector, Project Coordinator of one of
the event’s keynote supporters, the Situating Science Strategic Knowledge
Cluster in Canada (www.situsci.ca) “the free events are a great chance to
involve the public in key underlying science issues that continue to engage
us. These are big questions requiring big thinking.”
