Subject: 3 Ph.D. Research Assistantships
Dear Colleague:
Please share the following announcement with potential applicants. Thank you
for your assistance.
*******************************************************************
Three Ph.D. students are sought to work on an exciting interdisciplinary
project that will assess the ecological and economic effects of natural
resource management. This 4-year project will address issues such as the
composition and spatial arrangement of forest stands and their effects on
forest productivity, biodiversity, game species, timber values, and non-market
values. Combining empirical and modeling approaches, the project will develop
a comprehensive framework and a suite of tools for integrated forest and
wildlife management across landscapes in Michigan.
The three positions are in the areas of landscape/wildlife ecology, resource
economics, and forest ecology. For the position in landscape/wildlife ecology,
the candidates should have a strong quantitative background and a keen interest
in studying wildlife ecology at multiple scales. For the position in resource
economics, the candidates should have strong quantitative skills and an ability
to conduct survey research. For the position in forest ecology, the candidates
should have strong quantitative and field skills and have an interest in the
relationship between forest dynamics and deer at both stand and landscape
scales. In addition, all successful candidates must be interested in
collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and resources
managers.
Excellent benefits include a 4-year research assistantship (starting at
$14,400/year), tuition waiver, health insurance, support for attending
professional meetings, and close interactions with resource management
agencies.
Starting dates for these positions are flexible (e.g., winter, summer, or fall,
2000). The positions will remain open until filled, but applicants are
encouraged to apply before December 15, 1999 for full consideration.
Interested students should send (1) letter of interest, (2) transcripts and GRE
scores (unofficial ones are OK initially), (3) statement of professional goals,
(4) resume, and (5) names of three references, to one of the following faculty
