ESRI conference, last week of June

Thanks for everyone for the support for this year's ESRI registration.
However, I have a conflict that will prevent me from attending this year,
which lets up one of the freebies. If no other staff/faculty are interested
in attending, I agree we should open it up to students...

| I'd like to add a student-candidate to the list of eligible UW attendees,
although I
| do not know if my nominee will be able to go. Of course, Robert Norheim
and Jennifer
| Stone unquestionably have my vote for staff-attendees in any case. Both
have been
| extremely helpful in my endeavors in starting up the UW's Olympic Natural
Resources
| Center (ONRC) GIS, and I consult them both in a variety of GIS-related
activities.
| Robert Norheim has lead the effort with me in developing our "ONRC
Clearinghouse for
| the Olympic Peninsula," and has advised ONRC GIS in other projects.
|
| Keven Bennett is my student-nominee if any student can go. Keven is known
as our
| "secret weapon" on the ONRC Clearinghouse away-team
| [ < http://cathedral.cfr.washington.edu/~chouse/ > ].
|
| Keven is a powerhouse in spatial analysis with just a few years of
educational
| exposure to GIS. He has been using ESRI software for several years,
starting at
| Green River Community College, and is completing his Geography degree at
the UW this
| year (2000-2001). ONRC GIS has benefitted a great deal from his spatial
mind (NO pun
| haha), and in only the first few months of work-study employment with the
| Clearinghouse, I've asked him to be the lead at ONRC GIS in developing a
very
| complex spatial analysis project - mapping and modeling the spread of
Spartina
| alterniflora in Willapa Bay, WA, as well as support me in other
Clearinghouse
| and internal ONRC GIS projects. In a weekend, he hand-cranked a
preliminary spread
| model using ArcView's Spatial Analyst, if you can believe that! He has
also
| developed several AML scripts for use on the Clearinghouse in the process
of mining
| GIS data for the Olympic Peninsula. In the next few months, he and I will
be
| checking into MapObjects and other internet map services that might be
useful for
| the Clearinghouse. Look for his name on these products in-development.
This guy
| could benefit from some professional exposure if any opportunity arises,
and he
| deserves some toys from ESRI for all the work he produces with their
software for
| the UW's Olympic Natural Resources Center.
|
| Thanks for reading,
