The Map Collection is hiring a new GIS Student Assistant. Please share this

CLOSING DATE: Friday, July 21 (I will be out of the office for part of July,
and will contact people the week of the 24th to set up interviews.)

START DATE and LENGTH OF POSITION: late July/early August, continuing
through fall, winter and spring quarters.

POSITION TITLE and CLASSIFICATION:
Geographic Information Systems Assistant
12-19.5 hours/week (must be enrolled as a UW student at time of hire)

PAY: $10-13/hour, depending on skills and qualifications

LOCATION:
Map Collection and Cartographic Information Services, Suzzallo Library

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the general supervision of the GIS Librarian, assist Library users
with GIS software, computerized mapping products, and data products.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND:
GIS experience, including data transfer, ArcView, and Arc/Info; strong
computer skills; good oral and written communication skills.

DUTIES:

* Offer consultation services to Library users for ArcView, ArcInfo, local
and remote data sets, and electronic maps and atlases as needed.

* Assist users with local and remote data capture and formatting.

* Help maintain the Washington Geospatial Data Archive,
http://wagda.lib.washington.edu, and other Library data pages.

* Install and maintain Library machines' public software and data. Prepare
brief documentation for spatial data products installed on unit PCs.

* Perform related duties as required.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
ArcView 3.2; ArcInfo 8.0, 7.2.x; FTP; Windows/NT compression tools; GIS data
conversion; strong public service skills; cartographic skills;
database/information systems background.

The software in use in the Libraries includes ESRIs Arc/Info, ArcView,
Spatial Analyst, Network Analyst, 3D Analyst, and other ESRI products;
Geolytics; Wessex; various electronic atlases, etc.
