Phil,

I wonder if you could post this announcement where potential applicants
might see it. If any of your students is interested, have them contact
me. A Word copy of the document is attached.

Thanks,

GIS INTERNSHIP
THE WILDERNESS SOCIETY

The Wilderness Society is embarking on a regional conservation planning
project in the Central Cascade Mountains of Washington. Relying on
partnerships with local agencies, land trusts, watershed groups and
concerned citizens, the Society's Center for Landscape Analysis is
performing GIS analyses to help prioritize conservation efforts across
administrative boundaries. Such analyses will include modeling of both
native habitat and human development. The results of these analyses will
then be input to a decision support system called SITES. Developed by
Frank Davis at U.C. Santa Barbara, the SITES program has been widely
adopted by The Nature Conservancy and the broader conservation
community. The program allows landscape managers to site cost-effective
real estate opportunities within a comprehensive science-based
conservation strategy. Because the program is currently being applied in
the Sierra Nevada ecosystem, the intern will likely familiarize
her/himself with the methods developed in that study area. Two potential
intern positions are available depending on the applicant's level of
experience.

The first intern position involves the preparation of data for the
landscape model. The intern will be expected to collect GIS data,
digitize new data, edit data layers, organize diverse information, and
generate maps. The applicant should have course experience in ArcView and
Arc/Info and a good sense of organization. The intern will gain experience
in data development, project planning, and working on and
interdisciplinary program team, and conservation applications of GIS.

The second intern position involves the implementation of the landscape
model. The intern will be expected to complete a range of tasks including
data collection, working with to program team to plan model
implementation, and running the model under various planning
scenarios. The applicant is expected to have both course and project
experience in GIS, experience with both ArcView and Arc/Info software, and
an ability to work independently to think through data management and
analytical problems. The individual will gain experience in program
planning, GIS modeling, and conservation applications of GIS.

The interns will work between 12 and 19.5 hours per week at an hourly rate
not less than $12.00. In addition, the interns may be able to arrange
for 1-2 credits of individual special projects through the faculty of the
Department of Urban Design and Planning.

Inquiry and applications should be made through Dr. Earl J. Bell in the
Department of Urban Design and Planning at belle at u.washington.edu.
