POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
GIS/REMOTE SENSING TECHNICIAN

USDA Forest Service
Pacific Northwest Research Station
Seattle Forestry Sciences Lab

Duties:
The student will participate in a cooperative project between the UW and the
USDA Forest Service. Duties will include: to obtain GIS data from various
sources. Manipulate land cover and elevation data using ARC/INFO and
ARCEDIT. Create graphics with ARCPLOT for use on the WWW. Automate
processes using AML. Rectify, mosaic and enhance remotely sensed data.
Convert remotely sensed imagery to GIS format.
Requirements:
A solid understanding of GIS and remote sensing principles and theory gained
through pertinent course work. Classroom or professional experience with
ARC/INFO software including ARCEDIT, ARCPLOT and AML. Hands-on experience
with ERDAS Imagine image processing software. A fundamental understanding
of the Unix operating system. Good computer programming skills are required
as is an ability to work independently within a team environment
Hours/Compensation:
This position may be implemented as a University of Washington hourly
position or as an RA for graduate students. 15-20 hours per week with pay
dependent on experience. One-half time RA. Start date: January, 2001
