Here's a job announcement for a GIS analyst at the National Marine
Fisheries Service at Montlake. You can apply either as an ecologist, or

Major Duties:
Incumbent will be involved in geographical information systems (GIS)
analysis of physical and
biological data necessary for salmon recovery planning in the Willamette
and Lower Columbia
Basins (WLC). Analysis will aid Technical Recovery Teams in identifying
populations, assessing
population viability, determining habitat relationships to salmon
populations and planning recovery
actions. These analyses will require the incumbent to compile, develop
and analyze GIS and
ecological data layers such as land-cover, landforms, land ownership,
threats, fragmentation
patterns, remote sensing imagery and other appropriate data layers for
identifying conservation
priorities. The incumbent will create high quality maps and digital data
sets in support of the recovery
planning and prepare both written and oral reports. Written reports will
be for both internal use and
in collaboration with other researchers for peer-reviewed publication.
The incumbent will work with
other GIS analysts, biologists, oceanographers and geomorphologists both
within NMFS and in
other agencies. The employee will have primary responsibility for
coordinating and conducting GIS
analysis in the WLC.
Qualifications Required:
Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the
next lower grade, which
has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and
abilities to successfully perform
the duties of the position. Experience is typically in or related to the
work of the position described.
Basic Requirements:
A.Degree: cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by
at least 30 semester hours
in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics.
Such course work includes,
but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry,
physical and geological
oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical
geography, and remote
sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no
more than 15, semester hours
of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college
level algebra, trigonometry,
calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent
college-level courses as
prerequisites).
OR
B.Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major
in cartography, or a
major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in
cartography, and/or
directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in A above,
plus appropriate experience
or additional education.
Evaluation of Experience: Applicants whose experience in cartography
was in the Federal service may have gained this experience by working in
an occupational series
other than GS-1370. Occupations in which experience may have been gained
include Geography,
GS-150; Civil Engineering, GS-810; General Physical Science, GS-1301;
Geodesy, GS-1372; and
Land Surveying, GS-1373.

hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
