Project Description:
One ECO Associate is needed to assist the State GIS Fire Lead at the
Bureau of Land Management Idaho State Office in the development of Statewide
GIS layers and products used by resource specialists in Fire Management
planning. The position is located and supervised by the GIS staff, but will
work for the Fire & Aviation Program. Work will involve
updating/creating/reviewing data, assembling statewide layers from
District/Field Office data, creating maps and reports requested by resource
specialists, analysis, assisting/training resource specialist in using GIS
programs, and exploring more effective ways to distribute GIS products and
reports. The objective is to provide resource leads with GIS data and
products used in Fire and Land Management programs.
Specific tasks will include GIS data development and analysis and
the production of maps and reports for the Fire and Aviation Staff. Work
will involve reviewing data for spatial/attribute compatibility, overlaying
data layers for the analysis, generating acre reports, updating data, maps
and reports. Work will be done on Windows 2000, Windows NT, or Windows XP
platform, and use ArcGIS 8.x , ArcView 3.x, Access, or Excel to produce
cartographic output, generate reports, import/export, digitize/scan, edit,
attribute, and analysis. Duties will also include documentation and
metadata of GIS data and analysis.
GIS has become increasingly more important in Land Management.
Reliability of GIS data, analysis, and cartographic products depends on
quality control standards, organization, and documentation to guarantee the
integrity of data and analysis. The ECO Associate will play an integral
role in providing resource staff with analysis products as well as the
creation and maintenance of data used in analysis. This will provide an
excellent opportunity to increase knowledge and professional experience in
GIS and natural resources. The candidate will have the opportunity to be
involved with and help coordinate projects from start to end, as well as
working as part of Team member with other GIS and natural resource
specialists. The Associate will gain an increased understanding of BLM
operations and activities and may have the opportunity for interagency work
with other Federal or State Agencies.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Authorization to work in the US required.
Must be a current student or have obtained a degree within the last 3 years.
Must have some experience with desktop or workstation ArcInfo or ArcView
(school or work) . Experience with Access, Excel , or Pathfinder/GPS,
ERDAS, desirable, but not required. Attention to detail and quality of
work, and ability to work with others is critical. Candidate should feel
comfortable working as part of a team in a dynamic environment and with
changing deadlines and priorities. Some travel to other Idaho BLM offices
may be required.
Optimum qualifications: Bachelor of Science in geography,
cartography, fire ecology, environmental science, forestry/range, or
similar field relating to GIS or natural resources obtained within the last
three years. Proficiency with ArcInfo 7.x,/ArcGIS 8.x, ArcView 3.x
essential. Working knowledge of AML, Visual Basic or other programming
desirable. Experience with database or spreadsheet programs such as Access
or Excel required. Candidate must have the ability to work as a member of a
team as well as the ability to work with minimal supervision.
The Idaho BLM GIS Program will provide an excellent opportunity to
expand on GIS knowledge and apply them in a dynamic environment. The BLM
manages over 30 million acres in Idaho. Managing such a large, diverse
area requires supportable decision-making, and the ability to share data and
analysis with other agencies. GIS is expected to take on an increasingly
larger role in land management decisions.
Boise is the State’s capital, with a community of approximately
180,000. It has a full range of services, shopping, entertainment,
recreation, and educational services. It is home to Boise State University.
Outdoor enthusiasts will love the area. Boise is close to mountains,
forests, deserts, and whitewater rafting. In addition to numerous City
parks, there is greenbelt along the Boise River as well as the Foothills,
Boise’s backyard ,offering hiking and mountain biking.
Terms:
Full-time; 30 weeks; $14.00 to $17.00 an hour; June 2003; Deadline
