[UW-GIS-L] Trouble with projections

Because ArcMap attempts to be so smart about dealing with projections, I
suggest loading both data sets into ArcView. If they don't line up, then
you know for sure that they are in different projections. Mainly I've had
this issue with images, as GeoTIFF have internal headers, while other
files can have .aux, .tfw, .hdr, that can all confuse ArcMap. Make sure
you don't have a projection defined for the data frame as well, as this
can make ArcMap confuse itself.

A patron came in with 1990 and 1980 census tract shapefiles for King County that Jenny Stone, the previous Head of the Map Library had given her awhile back. The 1980 shapefile's coordinate system is GCS Assumed Geographic 1, the datum D North American 1927 and the spheroid Clarke 1886. The 1990 shapefile is unprojected. I have tried using ArcCatalog and ArcToolbox to import the coordinate system of the 1980 shapefile, but that didn't work. I have also tried reprojecting them both into a new coordinate system all together. I have made sure the map units are the same as well. I would appreciate any suggestions.
