[UW-GIS-L] vertical adjustement of 1947?

It has been some time ago, but I recall reading a good review of NGVD 29 
in a report in the Engineering Library.  I searched for it and it may be 
the following:

International Symposium on the North American Vertical Datum (3rd : 1985 
: Rockville, Md.)

You may also find references in there that could lead to an answer.
