  Positions: GIS Technicians/GIS Analysts

  Salary: $25,000 per year - $35,000 per year depending on qualifications and experience


  Duration: 1 Year


  Location:Seattle,WA 

  Major Duties: 
  Positions are with the National Marine Fisheries Service, Northwest Fisheries Science Center. Incumbent is a member of a multi-disciplinary research team working on the development of analytical tools for salmon and steelhead recovery efforts in the Columbia River Basin. Successful applicants will compile and analyze spatially-explicit habitat and salmon population data to assess habitat impairment and its impact on salmon and steelhead populations in the Columbia River Basin. Duties and responsibilities include: compiling and documenting geospatial datalayers of the abundance, survival, migration, and habitat of salmonids; exploring and resolving inconsistencies and ambiguities in existing data; working closely with Federal, state, local, and tribal agencies to verify data sources and methods of collection; summarizing data and conducting spatial analyses of available data; using and adding to GIS databases; and assisting with the preparation of reports, graphics, and manuscripts for scientific reports and journals. 

  Required Qualifications: 

  1) Experience with spatial analysis techniques and skill using GIS and spatial modeling software. The incumbent must have experience and skill in using spatial analysis techniques (using various GIS and spatial modeling software) to investigate the relationship between various populations and their associated habitats, based on biological and environmental geospatial data; 

  2) Skill in creating, searching, and documenting multi-disciplinary geospatial databases. The incumbent must have demonstrated skill in creating, searching, and documenting scientific databases, including GIS; 

  3) One year of experience using ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS, Arc/Info, ArcView, ArcSDE). 

  Additional Qualifications: 

  1) One year of experience using ESRI Avenue, ArcObjects, Visual Basic, and/or AML. 
  2) The following education criteria are desirable but not required: A degree with major study in biology, zoology, or biological oceanography that included at least 30 semester hours in biological and aquatic science and 15 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences. This course work must have included: (1) at least 15 semester hours of preparatory training in zoology beyond introductory biology or zoology in such courses as invertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, histology, physiology, embryology, advanced vertebrate zoology, genetics, entomology, and parasitology; and (2) at least 6 semester hours of training applicable to fishery biology in such subjects as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, oceanography, algology, planktonology, marine or fresh water ecology, invertebrate ecology, principles of fishery population dynamics, or related course work in the field of fishery biology; and (3) at least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, or statistics. To qualify based on desired education requirements, submit copy of transcript or list of courses with credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
