[UW-GIS-L] invalid ArcMap document

Hi--
My ArcMap mxd file just blew up while I was trying to save it.  Now it produces an error saying, "The specified file does not contain a valid ArcMap document".

While I realize I can just set this up again, it will take a whole bunch of time.  is there any way to fix an mxd file that might have gotten corrupted?

General info--I am running 8.3 under Windows XP.  I was in the middle of editing a shapefile when this happened.  It's the second time one of my mxd files stopped working abruptly.
