[UW-GIS-L] Geocoding question

Karen--

You may be tempted to use either the ESRI census tracts shapefile
supplied on their data disk, or the tract shapefiles direct from the US
Census, to perform your Identity analysis. Both of those are suitable
for many purposes (I've used them many times myself) but you should be
aware that both of them are generalized, and therefore subject to
boundary errors for your purpose. Ideally you would want to use a tract
polygon shapefile/feature class that conforms to your geocoding street
network (or visa versa), since tract boundaries are derived from streets
and natural features. But it may be quicker and easier for you to use
the ESRI/Census shapefiles and either manually check or develop a
routine for checking those addresses that are geocoded within a
tolerance distance of a tract boundary.

Good Luck,
Craig

	Luke,

Thanks for the response. I assume then that I need to get the
census tracts elsewhere and then use the join function to add that
column to the datafile. IN response to your second question I am
interested in keeping the XY location not the addresses.

	Best,
	Karen

		Karen,

		1) Geocoding will not add a column for census tract.
Once you have a point feature class of geocoded addresses lookup
"Identity (Analysis)" in the help.

		2) You want to maintain the addresses or the XY
locations of the addresses? You many need to use a relational database
like Microsoft Access with a unique "subject" identifier in order to
maintain multiple addresses for each study subject.

		Subject: [UW-GIS-L] Geocoding question

I am working on a geocoding project. I have two
questions that I need some assistance with.

		1) I am able to get the X and Y coordinates for the
addresses but I also need to get the census tract. Is their a command or
set of commands in ArcMap to add a column for the census tract in the
geocoding process?

		2) I am working with a longitudinal data set and I have
addresses at several time points. Many of the addresses do not change
throughout the study but some change at the second time point and others
at the third or fourth. I am not sure the best data management technique
to deal with this. I want to be able to carry over the matched addresses
at time point one to the additional time points.

		Thank you for your help.

		Best,
		Karen
