[UW-GIS-L] New ArcGIS install -- rasters won't load

Hello,
I've recently installed ArcGIS (9.1) on a new PC (Win XP SP2) and am unable to load any raster files. The following message is displayed:

Raster Data Object Error
    Invalid raster dataset. Failed to create raster layer.

Right-clicking on a raster file in ArcCatalog and trying to open its properties also returns an error: "Failed to open dataset."

Shapefiles load just fine.

Has anyone encountered this problem? I know the raster files themselves are OK.
