Scott,
If you've got the money ($250 for a student license), I'd recommend just buying IDRISI and doing your analysis with it. I know everyone else at UW uses Arc, and Arc is still (I suspect) better for dealing with vector datasets, but for doing scientific work with raster data IDRISI is hard to beat.
