[UW-GIS-L] IMPORTANT MESSAGE to ESRI license managers

Those of you who manage ESRI license servers at the UW, please read on,
others can ignore this message.
It's that time of the year again to renew ESRI licenses.
There was a suggestion that I add functionality to the license request
system so that users can delete their systems that are no longer being
used, or a checkbox for "update this machine." That's part of the plan,
but until I get around to that, for now I'd like those of you who manage
ESRI license servers to simply respond to this message.
Below my sig you will see a lot of text that has names of the systems for
which I have records that were licensed since 2000, arranged
alphabetically by UWNetID of the license manager. Just go through the
list and delete records for machines that you do not wish to have
re-licensed this year. This of course means you should delete records for
systems that you don't manage.
Sorry for the extra work but this will make the job of renewing licenses
much easier. I will simply renew licenses for the machines on the lists
that are sent back to me. You may see redundant entries; just delete any
that do not need renewing. I will also remove records for non-rewnewed
machines from the list of machines in the license request system. If you
do not see your machine on this list let me know.
I will assume all licenses are for version 9 unless you specifically state
that a license is for version 8. If you need both version 8 and 9 for a
single server also let me know that. For example:
foobar: snafu (needs v 8)
foobar: catch22 (needs v 8 and 9)
This would indicate that for user foobar, server `snafu' needs only a
license for version 8; server `catch22' needs both 8 and 9; and server
`majormajor' only needs version 9.
I'm waiting to hear from ESRI about when we'll be able to do the update,
but we've never had downtime from this in the past and I don't anticipate
any problems this year. When the licenses are generated you will get your
license via e-mail along with instructions on how to do the license
When you update your license, if you are serving more than a single
license, please update your license.opt file in order to keep non-UW users
from using the license. See
Thanks for your cooperation!
