[UW-GIS-L] license server issues

So the reason the license didn't failover is because toniwha.atmos has been
changed to stone.ess and duwamish.lib was misbehaving. The issue on
duwamish.lib has been corrected so we should now have 3 functional ArcGIS
license servers:

27004 at sde.gis.washington.edu;27004 at stone.ess.washington.edu;27004 at duwamish.l
ib.washington.edu

The license server page at...

http://gis.washington.edu/cgi-bin/servers/ESRI_server_status.pl

...only confirms that the server is online and listening on that port. It
does not guarantee that licenses are being served. A custom ArcEngine
application is needed to create a web page that would confirm that licenses
can indeed be checked out. If I were really nice or perhaps paid to do so I
would write such a thing but I am neither.

So everything is up and running smoothly for now and everyone that has their
licenses setup to fail over using the ARCGIS_LICENSE_FILE environment
variable or the Registry hack should see reduced start times when loading
ArcGIS and have redundancy if a license server should fail.

We are constantly (voluntarily) striving to provide better service to all
GIS users on campus and this fall we hope to implement some network trickery
to make ArcGIS licensing easier and more reliable for everyone.

From what I can tell from this page:

http://gis.washington.edu/ESRI/arcgis_install/registry.html

we are currently setup correctly for these servers (copied right from
the regedit key on a problematic machine):

27004 at sde.gis.washington.edu;27004 at toniwha.atmos.washington.edu;
27004 at duwamish.lib.washington.edu

I understand toniwha is gone. Which server was down? Both SDE and
Duwamish were shown to be live on this web page:

http://gis.washington.edu/cgi-bin/servers/ESRI_server_status.pl

at the same time we were having problems. I'd like to resolve this as
we were also down Sunday April 1st because one server was down with
firewall issues and the other servers didn't kick in then either. Any
ideas?

Have the instructions changed from the web page above? Thanks.
