FYI:
You may remember me asking for help on this one back in May.  I 
eventually got around to submitting a bug report and getting help from 
ESRI.  My problem was that I had named my temporary directory ARCTMPDIR,
violating the unix convention of making all file and directories lower 
case.  So:

mv  /wd1/topog/ARCTMPDIR  /wd1/topog/arctmpdir
   setenv ARCTMPDIR /wd1/topog/arctmpdir

and it works fine.

I have (I was surprised too.) a new Sun running solaris 10, and just 
installed arcinfo.  I can start arc, but grid, arcplot and arcedit fail:
*Arc: grid
FATAL ERROR (ReOpenChannel)
Transition problems
Bailing out of GRID
GRID failed
Arc:
...
