[UW-GIS-L] large raster GRID, issues viewing and re-projecting

I am working with a large bathymetric map that is currently a raster
projected in UTM zone 9 (this is for a hydrothermal vent site off of the
coast of Washington). My problems with the dataset are two-fold. First, I
cannot zoom in on the raster past full extent. It appears as though I am
not able to draw anything except the initial pyramids, past that level I'm
left with a blank screen.
The second issue is that I want to combine this UTM dataset with a
GCS_WGS_1984 projected dataset. When I try to re-project the UTM raster as
a GCS (WGS_1984) using the 'project raster' tool in data management tools
the operation appears to complete successfully and the metadata gives the
correct projection, but the raster will not draw at all in ArcMap or preview
in ArcCatalog.
I believe that the initial UTM projection is correct as the bathymetry has
been used successfully before, but never in ArcGIS 9.3
I've tried clearing the projection for the dataframe, deleting the .prj file
for the raster, and changing the raster to a different image format such as
tiff. None of these were successful.
Also, other large rastered bathymetry files that I have simply crash ArcMap
and ArcCatalogue when I try to add them to a map or preview them,
respectively.
Any recommendations are be most appreciated. Thank you all.
Many thanks,
Alden Denny
