[UW-GIS-L] Can't export xy data to shapefile

When I have seen this problem it is usually an issue with the field
headers. Sometimes there is an invisible character like a space after
the field name. If you have an older version of Excel or OpenOffice Calc
you can save the spreadsheet as a .dbf file and bring it in to ArcGIS
that way, or save it as a .csv, and import it that way.

Subject: [UW-GIS-L] Can't export xy data to shapefile
I have an Excel file (.xls) of 13443 records with 37 fields per record.
I can read this file into ArcMap V9.3. However, when I try to export
the xy data to a shapefile, Arc crashes. The crash occurs after the
shapefile files have been created, but before data is written to them
(they are all 1 KB in size).
There are no formulae in the file (only numeric and text fields).
I successfully did this export with a two-month old version of the same
data file, but I cannot figure out what is different now (except some
updated data items).
Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.
