UW GIS and Remote Sensing Community:

Each year at this time we begin the process of renewing our site license
for the ERDAS Imagine software.  Unlike past years where there were a 
few departments or projects acting as the major funder for a large part 
of the cost of this software ... this year few of the past supporters 
are able to contribute to the site license.  Therefore, unless there are 
volunteers to make major funding support we will not be renewing the 
site license contract.

Our annual cost is $3,500 for 15 floating seats, plus $1,000 for the 
Photogrammetry add-on.  In the past, I asked that people provide a 
budget number and their approval for sharing this cost for this 
software, which has most often been ~$300 for each of the "number of 
seats" that they most wish to access.

This year things have changed!  First, because software used in the
classroom can only be funded through academic budgets and not through
research dollars ... and budgets are very tight in each of the schools 
... it is difficult to find enough funding support.  Second, there are 
other alternatives for image processing software which compete for 
dollars to support this software license.

Many people are "working" on alternative methods for how site licenses 
will (or can) be funded.  Clearly the best solution is not the way we've 
done this in the past.  If you are dependent on ERDAS Imagine software 
for your research and are willing to make a "major" contribution to the 
~$3.5k fee each year please let me know.
