John P. Snyder's "Map Projections: A Working Manual" mentioned below by
Nick Beer, is available on-line at
http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/djvu/PP/PP_1395.pdf but be aware it's about 400
pages. As far as I can tell, it still considered the standard in the
field.

It is certainly an important work. It may still stand as definitive.
Anyway, the mathematics are detailed and many examples are worked. UW
Libraries may have multiple copies. Enjoy.
