Fw: [UW-GIS-L] Projecting raster

Steven,

Are you required to use the netCDF raster or are you free to use another file in its place to serve the same purpose? If it's an orthophoto, there are several portals that might offer you free backdrop imagery of high-quality like the USGS Seamless data server. Probably the easiest route is to stream Bing maps directly into your ArcGIS project though. Just add in the layer from ArcGIS online. I have experienced excellent results and performance draping data having a NAD 83, WA State Plane spatial reference over native Bing Maps imagery that is in the WGS84, Mercator Auxiliary Sphere system. If you can't substitute another raster for the netCDF one I would echo Lisa's suggestion though. Good luck!

Steven,

Since this is a time-sensitive project, have you considered re-projecting the other features in your map to match the raster dataset? If the layers still do not match up that may point to an underlying problem with the datasets, which you should explain in your map sample.

Michael,
That is not really an option. I have been given a dataset which I know little about (both the data content and the dataset format) and have been asked to make a sample map.

I've had some strange results in the past with ArcMap trying to project things on the fly when adding datasets with different projections into the same .mxd. I would start fresh with two datasets that you know are in the same projection and add them to a new .mxd file, if you haven't tried that already.

Harvey,
Thanks, I found the tool using the search window.

I projected the netCDF raster file to State Plane and a ERDAS Imagine copy to NAD83 Harn and neither worked. If I cannot get it just georeference it. Not as clean or technically correct, though.

Steven

I never had much luck browsing the toolboxes. I used to use the index, but that has been replaced in version 10 with the search window. You may find that window docked to the right of arcmap, or you can find the icon in the toolbars in under the "Windows" pulldown. In the search window, type project raster, and it will search for possible tools, with links provided.

I am using ArcGIS 10 for the first time, I have never used this type of dataset before, and have not done GIS for months, which may explain my problems. When I to go the help menu, it says to use the "Project Raster" tool under "Data Management Tools," but that tool is not there.
