Dear Curriculum Coordinators Colleagues:
During its 2010-2011 session, the Faculty Council on Academic Standards,
with input from all three campuses, approved a new policy regarding
equivalent courses for the University Curriculum Committee to use when
approving courses and for the Office of the Registrar's Curriculum Office to
use when managing the University's curriculum. Attached is a copy of the
memo sent via campus mail on Friday to all academic deans and chairs
informing them of the new policy. Also attached are the updated new course
and course change applications which incorporate the new Course Equivalency
Policy which should replace the forms you now use (they are also posted on
the Curriculum Office website).
You can find the policy on the Curriculum Office website:

ourses

ntCourses> .
Over the course of the summer and early autumn, the Curriculum Office will
be identifying courses which may be affected by this new policy. If your
unit has an identified course, I will be contacting you, requesting a
current syllabus for the course. Once I have the syllabi for a potential set
of equivalent courses, I will distribute the syllabi to all affected units.
At that time, the appropriate committees or individuals within your unit
will need to review the syllabi and respond as to whether the other
unit(s)'s courses are equivalent to yours. If all units agree to the
equivalency, then the University will consider the courses as equivalent. If
there is lack of agreement on equivalency, the University Curriculum
Committee will work to resolve any issues, as needed.
As always, I am looking forward to working with you to help improve the
University's curricular offerings.
Please contact me if you have any question at uwcr at uw.edu or 3-5938.
Sincerely,
Jennifer A. Payne, M.Ed.
University Curriculum Coordinator
Office of the Registrar
University of Washington
